The stupid soap dish!

Dad arrived last night, and we ended up having venison steaks for dinner, along with rolls, mashed potatoes and pumpkin. Unfortunately the kids have gotten so used to Libby’s that they no longer appreciate freshly steamed pumpkin. I thought it was delicious!

The rental agency upgraded Dad’s sensible compact to a convertible. My theory is they find it humorous to send a guy from Florida around in a convertible in November, but the kids think it is great. He tool them for a ride this afternoon, and being the typical Mother I made them wear hats, gloves, even scarves!

Tonight we had Dad’s special recipe pizza with gorgonzola and caramelized onions. OMG it was so good! We celebrated Joshua’s birthday (TEN YEARS OLD!) today by playing all of our favorite party games like “don’t eat Pete” and “excuse me Sir”. Then we had a Chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla ice cream cake with an Oreo crust and whipped cream topping, followed by presents and goodie bags. One of his gifts was the new version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and all the children are watching it now. Earlier today Gary brought him to the movies to see Zanthura because they give you a complimentary pass on your birthday. They played video games after and Joshua reports that Gary’s score was double that of the previous record. I’m so proud!

Dad and I have been working hard to get the bathroom remodel completed. We have done most of the plaster and have been working today on the tile surrounding the tub. I have always wanted to tile. It is something that I have always thought that I could do, but didn’t really believe that I could, so I told Dad that I wanted him only to supervise and let me do all the work. I was literally shaking for the first row. Knowing that next week Dad will be reading this is a bit embarrassing, but there it is. I was shaking. Weird, I know. Anyway, I think that I am doing a kick ass job. At least until we came to the soap dish. First of all the tiles are 6 X 8, and the soap dish is 4 X 4. We made all kinds of complicated cuts to get it to fit, and several tiles were broken in the process. Finally we got everything in place, and I did not like the way it looked. It looked better from the bottom (or from across the room!) than from the top. After I completed the next row it occurred to me that we could have made the cut in two tiles rather than four, so Dad suggested we pull it apart. We finally got all the cuts made and the tiles back on the wall, but we couldn’t get it even. With a little pressure the tile cracked, turns out a spacer had gotten caught behind it. Grr. We pulled it apart again, and in the process the soap dish fell and put a 1½ inch gouge in the new tub! I am very frustrated because we had an option to buy a more expensive tub that would have been fairly resilient to bumps, but we bought the cheaper tub knowing that it would chip if it got hit hard enough. We figured that it was pretty safe, it’s a bathtub for goodness sake, and we didn’t expect that it would be exposed to much wear and tear, but we were wrong. To replace the tub means tearing apart the expensive tile. It would have made more sense to put in the expensive tub and a cheap surround, but who knew the stupid soap dish would drop? I plan to ignore the spot until the tile is complete, and then patch it with some epoxy.

HI,

The first row was very good as was the rest of the job. No need to feel bad. You did you a kiss ass job and I'm proud of you.

Hi,
Visiting your blog for the first time. Love the background and details...looks professional.

I read "the descent into darkness" about us...funny. and I do LOVE the small blue fabric. I have washed and ironed it with TLC.
I am interested to go back and see if the chair is still there. If so, I may ASK for the pillows.
